Vienna’s religious leaders recently underscored the vital role of Vienna interfaith dialogue. Global conflicts and rising social polarization highlight its increasing local importance. Consequently, Mayor Michael Ludwig met with representatives from various faiths at Vienna City Hall. They discussed current challenges to peaceful coexistence across the federal capital.

Mayor Ludwig stressed the impact of international events on urban life. “International developments and numerous conflicts affect coexistence in our city,” he stated. “Especially now, dialogue and unity for respect and social cohesion are crucial.”

The Vienna Religious Council provides a permanent framework for this engagement. Mayor Ludwig established it in October 2023. This structured advisory body offers diverse religious communities an equal platform. Here, they discuss future socio-political issues and break down prejudices. Moreover, it prevents external crises from affecting city society.

In late January 2026, the council issued a strong statement. Members signed a comprehensive declaration of principles. This document affirms core humanitarian values. These include human dignity, freedom, justice, and gender equality. Furthermore, the alliance opposes religiously motivated violence, racism, antisemitism, and anti-Alevi, anti-Muslim, and anti-Christian sentiments.

Beyond this, the council supports various initiatives. These include educational programs and pastoral care in hospitals and prisons. It also actively combats hate speech on social media. Meanwhile, discussions also focused on practical matters.

Specifically, members addressed religious diversity within Vienna’s retirement and nursing homes. Familiar celebrations, dietary customs, and spiritual care gain significance in old age. Therefore, these facilities must ensure peaceful coexistence. Mayor Ludwig affirmed that residents should not abandon their religious identity. He also stressed that harmonious living among all individuals remains essential. Through such efforts, Vienna promotes differences not as obstacles. Instead, they are seen as an integral part of a reliable and supportive urban community.
